Contact F.A.Q.

General

Feel free to contact me with questions, requests for advice (on learning to paint or native plant gardening), requests, etc. Please be detailed.

Requests

Do you see art you want to buy but:

‣ You can't find somewhere to buy prints
‣ You want it on a different type of item (e.g., I only have it in a mousepad but you want it on a mug)
‣ You want to inquire about buying the original
‣ You want to buy it from a Canadian source instead of Redbubble
‣ You just have a question

⇢ Then please fill out the Contact Form! I'm happy to help. I will not charge anything extra for things like this.

Commissions

I do accept commission requests occassionally. Please see here for details, options, and pricing, and use the Contact Form to submit a detailed request.

Custom Commissions F.A.Q.

Are commissions open?

I do allow commission requests (use the contact form), but whether I agree to them will depend on whether I have time in my life as well as confidence that I can create what you are asking for. I do not like to be busy with them. You can improve your chances by having a very clear, specific idea, and providing all details up-front as to what kind of art you're hoping for, including size.

Colour vs. b&w

All commissions are in full colour unless otherwise stated.

how long do they take?

I only do this for fun, and I have a full-time job, other hobbies, responsibilities, and health issues, so turn-around time may be weeks. I'll give you an estimate when we agree on a commission but I require flexibility on this.

"I only want digital"

If the subject matter is something I prefer to paint by hand, and you only want digital (not the original copy), I can scan it in high quality (1200 DPI) for you and keep/sell the original.

Prices

Prices are in Canadian dollars, and shipping is not included for physical art. See price list below. Note that these are suggestions, and the details can be discussed (e.g., if you want a larger size).Prices are paid 100% up-front before I will begin the work. I will not accept refund requests if I've already spent over an hour on the project.

"minimums"

All prices are "minimums" because it may be higher if you request larger size, higher complexity, additional features (e.g., multiple characters/creatures), subject matter that I find more challenging or out of my wheelhouse, complex perspectives, and/or if you request me to be quicker about it (which I will consider for a reasonable premium). The "minimum" price applies assuming you're requesting something fairly standard compared to what I usually paint.I will be transparent about this as we discuss.

Note

Unless otherwise negotiated, I will use your commissioned artwork (a low-resolution copy/scan) as an example on my website.

Supplies & resources I recommend
for {aspiring} artists

preface

I am self-taught for the most part. I did art classes throughout most of public school, but not in the final year or two of highschool nor beyond.Any links to Amazon herein are associate links that give me a small commission at no extra cost to you.If you can, SHOP LOCAL! Support small businesses in your local area. However, sometimes it's not feasible for whatever reason, and then you can take a few cents out of J### B###'s pockets and put them into mine, if you'd like.If you have any questions about supplies, choosing a type of paint/medium, or about learning to do art, feel free to reach out using my contact form.

Watercolour Paints

beginners

The Winsor & Newton "Cotman" line is a fantastic middle-price starter set for beginners. Although you can definitely find cheaper paints out there, you'll experience a lot of frustration with the quality.Buy a small set and learn to mix them using tutorials. When I was completely new at watercolour, specifically, I really liked "Let's Make Art"'s tutorials (YouTube) because they taught the true basics (I'm not affiliated).I really strongly recommend tubes of liquid paint, not pans; it is really just so much easier to work with. The first link is to the product line, and the second is to the set I recommend a beginner starts with - this or a smaller set (6 paints). Don't get a larger set to start, you'll hamstring yourself!

- Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolour Paints, Brand- Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolour Paints, Set of 12 x 8mL tubes

Intermediate +

The Daniel Smith brand extra fine watercolours
are expensive but very high quality and lovely to work with. Very pigmented. The first link is to the brand in general, and the second is the specific set I began with when I wanted artist-grade paints.

- Daniel Smith extra fine watercolours, Brand- Daniel Smith extra fine watercolours, Set of 6 x 5mL tubes

Gouache Paints

What I Use

I am not able to divide Gouache brands into beginner and artist, as I dove right in to Winsor & Newton Designer Gouache. There are cheaper and there are more expensive brands out there. I am linking both the brand itself, followed by the introductory set of paints I began with.
Be very careful if looking into different brands of gouache; you have to pay attention to whether they are acrylic based (or acryla-gouache) or water based.
I use water based gouache because I want the fluidity of watercolour with the opacity, expressiveness, and freedom of gouache. If you purchase acryla-gouaches, your experience will be different than mine; these are not water-soluable and do not reactivate if re-wetted. They are similar to matte-finish acrylic paints.

- Winsor & Newton Designers' Gouache, Brand- Winsor & Newton Designers' Gouache Introductory Paint Set, 10 x 14 mL tubes

Watercolour Paper

A note on choosing paper

Paper quality will make an enormous difference in how the paint behaves on your page. Three things matter the most when it comes to paper:1) What is it made of? Cotton is the best quality, but 50% cotton can be acceptable if (A) on a budget and/or (B) if using gouache, which is more forgiving than watercolour when it comes to paper quality.2) Is it "hot press" or "cold press"? Most watercolour artists use cold press - this is more textured paper. Hot press has a glossier surface that shows colours more vividly and starkly, but can take less water than cold press before starting to ruin the surface.3) What is its "weight"? For a beginner, 140lb (also called 300 gsm) is generally reasonable. At a higher price point, 300lb paper is beautiful to work with and handles more water before starting to warp and show artefacts. If you're painting with gouache instead of true watercolour, you may be able to get away with lower-quality paper if you tend to paint thickly, because the quality - especially weight - particularly makes a difference when you are using a lot of water (i.e., transparent washes). All else like size, loose pages vs. books vs. pouchettes, etc., are down to your personal preference. Experiment and have fun and find what brings you joy.

Brands / products I have used

- MEEDEEN has very affordable 160lb cotton cold-press paper I often use for practice pieces.- FLUID 100 sells blocks (papers glued together for more stability) and pouchettes (loose paper in a sleeve) that I use often.- ARCHES is a more expensive but very well-trusted and well-loved brand.- I love the tan-toned painting journal from Strathmore for gouache.

Other arts & crafts

Cyanotyping and fabric dyeing

- Cyanotyping supplies - all you need is the 2 component sensitizer set, something to dye (fabric or paper), and something to make an impression of (e.g., a leaf).- Rit fabric dye - works excellently on clothes! Be careful to pick the type you need based on what your fabric is made of.

Polymer clay sculpting

- Polymer Clay Tools, 24 Pcs- Sculpy III Oven-Bake Polymer Clay, 1-Pound, White

Acrylic Paints I use on clay

- Golden Acrylic - Heavy Body (Note: you can definitely get away with cheaper acrylics for this)

Acrylic Paint Markers

- Magicfly Acrylic Paint Pens, 24 Colours (currently can't find on Amazon)
